“Alec Soth has created a photographic career out of finding chemistry with strangers”
Alec Soth (rhymes with ‘both’) is an American photographer.
He was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA in 1969.He studied at the Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York. He became a full Magnum photo agency member in 2008. He is best known for his “large scale American projects”. He has had over 25 books published, including ,Sleeping by the Mississippi, Niagara, a photographic book called the Last Days of W, and Broken Manual (using the pseudonym Lester B. Morrison)it is basically a manual on how to help those that are looking for a way out of the rat race, he shows it is possible if you so wish it. Although he is married with children, you get the feeling that he is drawn to not only the outsiders, those living on the fringes of society, but he would like that type of solitary life, as he comes across as very introverted. It does help with his work, as he is more at home in this type of situation. He has also had over 50 solo exhibitions including survey shows organised by Jeau de Paume in Paris (2008), the Walker Art Centre in Minnesota (2010) and the Media Space in London (2015).
In 2010 he founded the publishing house Little Brown Museum. It allows him to publish his own work through it, but also, it allows him to publish work by like-minded people.
"I fell in love with the process of taking pictures, with wandering around finding things. To me it feels like a kind of performance. The picture is a document of that performance"
